SOUTHERN UTAH OFFICE SUPPLY
Speaking on Business
This is Fred Ball, Zions Bank, speaking on business.
Max Torres purchased an old bus in the early 60's and moved around various Utah Counties repairing old typewriters, adding machines and Victor and A. B. Dick office equipment. He gained a reputation for his dependability and great ability. He soon opened a retail and repair shop in Cedar City and named his company "Southern Utah Office Machines and Supplies."
There are now two stores, the original in Cedar City and a large facility in St. George. I enjoyed my visit with Fred Torres, Max's brother, and with Max's son, Richard in the St. George facility. It was fascinating to listen to the story of the great success and growth of this family business. (There are other members of the family involved. Jeff and Sarah Torres also work at Southern Utah Office Supply.)
Max early on began servicing machines for various school districts in Southern Utah. In 1975, he secured the Savin dealership and soon represented Epson, Hewlett Packard and other well-known and respected office machine lines. Southern Utah Office Supply originally only sold and serviced office machines but soon began selling a wide inventory of office equipment and supplies and then added office furniture, concentrating on desks and chairs.
The original business success of servicing the school districts has continued to be a part of the business and Max Torres and his company service school districts in Kane, Iron, Washington and Beaver Counties in Utah and Lincoln county, Nevada.
I was impressed with an idea that the Torres' family implemented that results in real savings to their customers. Instead of paying healthy freight charges for their inbound purchases, they make regular trips in large trucks to the Los Angeles area to pick up and deliver their own merchandise. This gives complete control of transit time and charges and the savings helps the company remain competitive.
Competitive factors have certainly changed in 45 years. The giant box stores that specialize in office supplies and equipment are big and aggressive but Max and his family recognize that great knowledge of their customers needs and wants and a dedication to complete customer satisfaction will continue to generate good business.
I'm Fred Ball, Zions Bank. I'm speaking on business.
