Big O Tires grew out of a tire-buying cooperative, founded in 1962 to supply tires to independent tire dealers. They banded together to compete against tire manuafacturers' company stores and big retail chains. Americans fell in love with their cars in the 1950s. Sales of automobiles and auto-related products such as tires rose dramatically. Progressive independent tire dealers like the founding fathers of Big O Tires, saw the handwriting on the wall. They needed to grow and change to serve a new kind of market. The tire-buying cooperative quickly evolved into the Big O Tires store franchise organization. It has grown to more than 540 stores in 22 states and Canada. The stores are independently owned and operated by members of the communities in which they are located. In July 1996, Big O Tires was bought by TBC Corporation, one of the largest sellers of tires in the world.
